Ethan Thomas wins News 5 WCYB Player Of The Year award
News 5 WCYB has named Elizabethton running back Ethan Thomas its high school football Player Of The Year.
This season Thomas ran for 1,924 yards and scored 24 touchdowns in ten games.
The junior racked up big numbers against some of the best teams in East Tennessee. "I've always wanted to play the best competition and try to do my best against the best competition," Thomas told News 5 WCYB.
He ran for over 200 yards in back-to-back weeks against Daniel Boone and Science Hill early in the season.
In the middle of the season, he had his signature game against Tennessee High. Thomas was unstoppable against the Vikings at the Stone Castle, rushing for 312 yards and four touchdowns. "I lived in Bristol for ten years. I know most of the people up there and wanted to show them what I got," he told us.
Thomas finished off his regular season with another explosive performance in a game against Sullivan South that decided the Three Rivers Conference title, rushing for 133 yards against a stout Rebels defense.
In the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs, his Cyclones ran into Greeneville, one of the top teams in the state this year. Thomas ran for 187 yards in the loss.
"To have 187 yards against Greeneville, those are tough yards," Elizabethton head coach Shawn Witten told News 5 WCYB.
With one more year of high school left, the recruiting process is beginning to heat up for the coveted running back. "I'm getting letters from Duke, Tennessee and Virginia Tech," he said.
Thomas has big plans for his senior year, with a state championship goal in mind.
Head coach Shawn Witten, a former News 5 WCYB Player Of The Year, believes Thomas can take them there. "In number 28 we trust, because he's never let us down," Witten said.
