Former Science Hill great Steve Spurrier should probably get to know the quarterback now wearing his high school number -- quarterback Reed Hayes is turning heads and could be getting some college recruiting attention very soon.

Last Friday night against Sullivan South, Science Hill quarterback Hayes had a game that will go down in the record books. The first-year starter completed 13 of 19 passes for 229 yards and a school record six touchdowns.

It wasn't until he exited the game that Hayes found out what he accomplished. "Coach Carter told me that I had six touchdowns and it was a school record," he said. "I was pretty excited."

"That's pretty special, six touchdown passes is something you might hear in the NFL," Hayes' coach told us. "[It's] just a great night for him and a phenomenal game."

What makes the feat even more impressive is that Hayes did it wearing the number 11 jersey of a former Science Hill standout named Steve Spurrier. "He would be honored if somebody used his number with permission from him to put it on our starting quarterback," Carter said. "What a fantastic one to start the tradition."

"I'm really honored to wear this number 11 jersey and play well in such an honorable jersey," Hayes said. "It's rare to do something he didn't do as a quarterback in this jersey."

Wearing the jersey of a quarterback that went on to win the Heisman Trophy in college could be a lot to deal with for some, but Science Hill head coach Stacy Carter had a simple message for Hayes before handing him the number 11 jersey. "Don't think about all the hype from the jersey and all the attention you're going to get. Just go out there, play football and get the win."

Win is exactly what Hayes has done. The senior has led the Toppers to a perfect 6-0 record and he continues to get better every week

"He's just scratching the surface on what he can do," Carter said. "The first year as a starting quarterback. It's just been a tremendous year for him. Who knows how high he can take this thing? It's been an outstanding year for him already and I hope he continues the same success."
