HAYSI, Va. -

A lot of high school teams are saving their best for last; but in Haysi, it'll be tough to top last week's performance.

We spent some time with the Tigers to find out more about our Player of the Week.

46, 37, 41, 61, 57 and 50 sound like bingo numbers. They are also how far Haysi running back Jeffrey Bowen's touchdown runs were last Friday night in the Tigers 62-24 win over Phelps, Kentucky.

Coach James Colley told us more about the game. "It was amazing to see. Seemed like every time he got the ball he was getting good blocks, breaking tackles and cutting left and right," he said.

Bowen only carried the ball nine times in the game but finished with 332 yards rushing and 6 touchdowns. That's an average of over 36 yards per carry.

"The second I saw my line blocking for me I knew that no matter what I was going to get some yardage that game," Bowen told us.

Five of Bowen's touchdown runs came in the first half, but it was his run in the second half that he will remember the most. "Coach told me I broke the school record, I broke 1000 yards. I looked behind me and every single one of my linemen was next to me running down the field.," he said. "That's pretty tough getting those big boys running with me."

Bowen didn't start his high school career at Haysi; the only reason he's there now is because nearby Ervinton High School closed. He says the transition to a new school has been smooth because of the people at Haysi. "I just came here and they came with arms wide open," he said. "They let me do what I do."

"He's a coach's dream as far as an athlete that works hard in practice all year round," Colley said about him.

Congratulations to Jeffrey Bowen for being named Player of the Week.
