Thursdays mean we're handing out hardware to our high school football player of the week. This week's top player is helping his team make history.

At 4-0, John Battle is off to its best start in the 54-year history of the school. The Trojans are coming off a 35-14 win over John I. Burton, where senior running back Cody Rogers ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns.

"That was a big win for us," Rogers told us. "That was probably the biggest win we've had."

Second-year head coach Steve Wright credits Rogers consistent approach to the game as a key to helping the Trojans turn their program around. "Cody gives us great effort every Friday night," Coach Wright said. "He works hard, plays hard and he's a good teammate. He's been a good leader this year as well as our other seniors. He has some quickness and we like to get the ball to him."

Almost halfway through his final season with the Trojans, Rogers has John Battle looking like a team that could make some noise come playoff time.

He's also making sure his team stays focused on the process of getting better every day. "We weren't satisfied with six wins last year. We want to come out and compete every week," Rogers said. "We did that so far. The biggest game of the season is whatever game we play this week."

It's an old-school mentality, but you can see why Rogers thinks that way when you find out who is favorite football player is. "I'm a big Earl Campbell fan," he said. "I was an Oilers fan growing up. I don't run like him by any means, though."

"He loves Earl Campbell. He's talked about him before," Wright said. "I don't think he's exactly an Earl Campbell guy. He's more of a run-around you guy that run over you."

In any case, he's an old-school player helping take John Battle to new heights.
