JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - University of Tennessee head coach Butch Jones confirmed to News 5 WCYB Tuesday evening that Kingsport's Devaun Swafford has been awarded a scholarship.
Jones was speaking at the Big Orange Caravan event at the Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City.
Swafford - a former standout at Dobyns-Bennett - started his Tennessee career as a grey-shirt non-scholarship player. He played in several significant games as a freshman.
"Devaun Swafford is an individual who we asked a lot of last year," Jones told News 5 WCYB.
"I'm proud to say while I'm in the Tri-Cities area, he will go on scholarship at the University of Tennessee. We are very excited about that as well."
New men's basketball coach Donnie Tyndall drew plenty of autograph and picture seekers Tuesday evening. He told News 5 WCYB he is familiar with this area because he is good friends with ETSU head coach Murry Bartow and would consider playing him in the future.
"Coach Bartow has been very very good to me over my career," Tyndall told News 5 WCYB.
"We forged a nice friendship at some point in time and I would love to come here and play a game."
Over 300 Tennessee fans from northeast Tennessee turned out to attend the event put on by the Washington County Alumni Association.
