The Holston High School football team is starting the season by accepting the resignation of head coach Jason Matlock and naming an interim head coach.

Holston school officials confirmed to News 5 WCYB Thursday that Matlock is leaving to become the assistant principal at Virginia Middle School. Matlock informed the team of his plans Wednesday night.

Practice started Thursday morning with defensive coordinator Derrick Patterson serving as interim head coach.

Matlock coached seven seasons, going 45-35.

The Cavaliers open the season Aug. 29 against Rye Cove.

Matlock's departure was first reported by the Bristol Herald Courier.
