High school standouts sign college scholarships

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

Several local athletes signed to compete in college Wednesday.

A large crowd was on hand in Johnson City for Science Hill senior basketball player Gabby Lyons. Lyons signed with Middle Tennessee State.

"They have a great basketball program," Lyons told News 5 WCYB.

"Now that they're in a new conference, I'm really excited to play for them."

Also at Science Hill, Allison Woodward signed a golf scholarship with Virginia Tech, Tessa Wilson signed a swimming scholarship with Cornell University, Emma Martindale signed to play softball at ETSU and two baseball players signed to compete at the next level.

Matthew Beaird signed with Coastal Carolina and Daniel Sweeney signed with ETSU.

In Bristol, Va., John Battle all-state baseball player Seth Cunningham signed with ETSU.

"They have the new field," Cunningham told News 5 WCYB.

"Football is coming back in a few years. It is definitely a growing school."
