High school football practice underway in Virginia
Virginia High is starting the season with new head coach Michael Crist. Crist will be their third head coach in the last four seasons.
With Thursday being the first day teams can practice in Virginia, Crist could barely sleep Wednesday night.
"There's a lot of excitement," Crist told News 5 WCYB.
"My dad was a head football coach, still is thirty-eight years. I told our staff I haven't slept before the first night of a high school football practice in probably twenty-eight years and last night was no different. A lot of it is excitement, ready to get started."
Crist is the son of long-time Blacksburg head coach Dave Crist.
The new coach plans to run a more balanced, wide-open offense this season, a contrast to what the Bearcats have been running the past few seasons. This change is resonating with the team.
"It's just a fresh new start again," senior running back Justin Brown told News 5 WCYB.
"Everybody is just happy to be out here working for him. We're starting a new offense that we ran the first couple years, the spread. This year it's a lot more intensity we're going to go with the no huddle."
Virginia High opens the season August 30 at home against Tazewell.
