Hardin Valley senior Matt Brewer has verbally committed to play football for ETSU.
News 5 WCYB spoke with Brewer Tuesday, who confirmed that he called head coach Carl Torbush Monday night and informed him of his decision.
"I made up my mind over the weekend and told my parents of my final decision," Brewer told News 5 WCYB.
"I called coach and he was very excited. He's excited to have a good foundation to build this thing off of."
Brewer is a 6-foot-3, 238 pound tight end who also played defensive end in high school. He was all-region the last two seasons, according to his coach.
"Matt has a tremendous upside," Hardin Valley head coach Wes Jones told News 5 WCYB.
"We play a really tough caliber of teams, and Matt excelled in our league."
Jones is a former ETSU football player, having captained the Bucs in 1996 as their starting center.
"I tried to be as neutral as I can be in influencing him," Jones said.
"It was his decision. He bought into it. With head coach Carl Torbush and assistant coach Billy Taylor, he was just really impressed. As a former Buc, I am totally excited."
Brewer also considered Kentucky Christian, Campbell and Mercer.
Brewer says he can now help recruit other East Tennessee players to play for the Buccaneers.
"I definitely intend to talk to other recruits and get them to come here with me," Brewer told News 5 WCYB.
"I've already gone through something similar here at Hardin valley. This past season was our fifth varsity season. I love making traditions and I am hoping to do the same at ETSU."
