Sharks 4, Kings 3: Logan Couture scored two goals and set up another as host San Jose held on to snap its four-game winless streak in the opener of a home-and-home series with Los Angeles.
Brent Burns recorded a goal and an assist while playing his second straight game as a forward, rookie defenseman Matt Irwin also scored and Antti Niemi made 34 saves for the Sharks, who won in regulation for just the third time in 21 games. passing Ron Wilson for first place on the franchise list.Captain Dustin Brown scored twice and Dwight King also tallied for the Kings, who host the Sharks on Saturday. Jonathan Quick allowed three goals on 12 shots before being replaced by Jonathan Bernier, who made 13 saves.
Burns opened the scoring at 11:09 of the first period by burying a loose puck from the low slot. Los Angeles rookie defenseman Jake Muzzin took exception to a hard hit on teammate Colin Fraser by Andrew Desjardins six minutes into the second and created a four-minute power play for San Jose, which took full advantage.
Irwin beat Quick from the top of the left faceoff circle at 7:07 and Couture fired a one-timer from the blue line past the screened goaltender 1:27 later for a 3-0 lead.
Brown answered less than two minutes afterward with a power-play goal to get Los Angeles on the board. Couture converted a 2-on-none rush 27 seconds into the third to restore the Sharks' three-goal advantage, but Brown and King scored less than four minutes apart later in the period to get the Kings within one.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Sharks captain Joe Thornton's assist on Couture's first goal was his 1,104th career point, moving him past Frank Mahovlich for 55th place on the all-time list. It also was Thornton's 775th assist, putting him one behind Jean Ratelle for 35th in NHL history. ... San Jose scored four goals for the first time since posting a 4-1 victory over Vancouver on Jan. 27. The Sharks had recorded fewer than three in 14 of their previous 15 games. ... Brown's two-goal performance was his third of the season and second in three contests.
