Defending NCAA men's basketball champion Connecticut could be ineligible for next season's tournament - as well as its own conference postseason tourney.

The Big East Conference on Friday agreed on a policy that would ban any team from its league tournament if it is academically ineligible for the NCAAs.

Connecticut has failed to meet the academic criteria to qualify for the 2012-13 NCAA tournament but has requested a waiver from the sport's governing body.

The NCAA Committee on Academic Performance will rule on a pair of issues that could determine the status of the Huskies.

Connecticut failed to reach the NCAAs this season due to its on-court performance.
