Local Soldier Laid to Rest Today After Fort Hood Shooting

More than 100 friends, family, and high ranking military officials gathered on a rural hillside in Johnson County, Tennessee for the funeral of Army Specialist Fred Greene today.  United States Defense Secretary Robert Gates was in attendance.

Greene's commanding officer called him a family man who loved to talk about his wife and children.  He was also described as the silent soldier and quiet professional.  Specialist Greene was laid to rest with full military honors in the cemetery next to Baker's Gap Baptist Church where he grew up.  The 29-year-old soldier leaves behind a wife, two young daughters and his parents.

"Fred's true passion was his family," said Capt. Jim Pence, 510th Clearance Company Commander.  "He was a family man who would talk often about his love and devotion for his wife Christie, and two daughters, Haley and Allison."

Greene was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas awaiting deployment to Afghanistan.  He joined the Army in may of last year in hopes of building a better life for his family.
