Eastman Spill Results In Fish Kill

A chemical spill at the Eastman Chemical Company  plant into the Holston River in Kingsport killed an undetermined number of fish.

Eastman Chemical spokeswoman Wanda Valentine said that the spill occurred a week ago.

About 2,150 gallons of acetic acid were accidentally released from the plant into a discharge channel leading to the river.

Valentine said the material diluted quickly and there was not danger to human health, but some fish near the plant were killed.

The incident was reported to the U.S. Coast Guard National Response Center, Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation,

Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and the local emergenc planning committee.

Valentine said they are investigating the cause of the spill.
