Bad Weather Equals Good Fishing !

jwood@wcyb.com

The weather has taken a nasty turn for the fishermen, but hey, the fish don't worry about the rain. My daddy always told me that fish bite better in the rain. Having said that, I guess the fish have been jumping in the boat.

Fall fishing is pretty good right now. Some of the more productive mountain trout streams have seen some pretty good fishing on prince nymphs down under. You'll need to use a bead head version or a little split shot in these rain swollen streams. Try stimulators and other stone fly imitations on top. A tan elk hair caddis fly will float during these heavy stream flows. The tail waters are fishing good.

Try sulfurs on the South Holston and caddis flies on the Watauga. TVA is still moving water in the afternoons along the South Holston and Watauga Rivers. Top water bass fishing is starting to pick up on South Holston. Try the Zara Spook jr, and Long A Bomber back in the pockets off stumps and lay down logs. And here's a new one. Strike King has another in it's sexy series. It's the Sexy Spoon, large flutter type spoon. Fish it off the clay points.

South Holston is enjoying its best night fishing of the year. Night time spinner baits and jigs are doing the job.

Meanwhile, the top water bass bite is still really good on Watauga Lake. They're using Pop R's, Zara Spooks and Bomber Long A. Night fishing is getting better on spinner baits.

Boone Lake bass fishing is hot both day and night. Lots of top water action on Zara Spook Jr and Bomber Long A. The fishing is really good at night on spinner baits. Stripers are breaking in the bait schools and you can catch them on top water lures like the Thunder Stick and Red Fin lures. You might even catch a bass or two as well. Crappie fishing is good on the fly and minnow combination in the brush.

Cherokee Lake is producing crappie on fly and bobber along the rocks in the upstream area. Try tipping that fly with one of the new Berkley Gulp Tiny Minnows. I hear they work pretty well. Bass fishing has slowed a little bit, but there are some fish in the shallows on Rattle Trap and Norman Deep Little N lures as well as a few fish on top water.

Douglas Lake daytime bass fishing is still pretty slow. The night fishing is much better on plastic worms and spinner baits. Douglas Lake crappie fishing is starting on the fly and minnow under a bobber in the upstream rocks.

Fall fishing is happening everywhere.
