Grayson Highlands State Park

Mouth of Wilson, Virginia

At more than 4,000 feet above sea level, the "Rooftop of Virginia" is just a little over 53 miles from the Tri-Cities.

In these high mountains, you will also meet some of the park's unofficial greeters, wild ponies. In fact, this is the state's only park that offers overnight camping for horseback enthusiasts.

The park has a sense of its historical roots with a representation of a mountain farm called The Homestead owned by a civil war veteran named Ingram long before the park came along.

They also offer guided backpack tours to the Mount Rogers Hiking Tree and canoe trips down the New River.

Such a place as this brings out the kid in us all, a sense of discovery and being a part of the big picture, and all of this is less than a tank of gas away.
