You could call it a milestone, or in this modern age a rare thing, to be married to the same person for 70 years.
On Monday, a Russell County, Virginia couple celebrated that achievement.
Ralph and Mildred Davis made quite the couple when they first got married back in the early 1940s, and over the years they have raised quite the family with three daughters, six grandchildren, and now three great-grandchildren.
They met in the same neighborhood where they've lived all those years. "We used to be kindly neighbors, lived about two miles apart. When we'd go to Lebanon, Virginia I'd see her. She lived up the road about a mile. We got together and fell in love," Ralph said.
They even remember the preacher who gave them their vows 70 years ago -- Alonzo Monday was his name, Ralph told us.
Ralph has farmed all those years the couple has been together. "I raised tobacco, had a small dairy here for awhile, then I had beef cattle. I had sheep until a dog put me out of business," he said.
But to be married for 70 years, there has got to be a secret, some magic formula -- but the answer is a simple one. "We respect each other and we love each other. Those are the two outstanding things that I would think that has held us together for 70 years. He respects me and I respect him, and we love each other," Mildred said.
It sounds like a slogan for a t-shirt, or just a formula for a happy marriage.
