The Barter Theatre is hosting a block party to celebrate its 80th anniversary.

The two-hour party will held Monday in Abingdon from the main stage on Main Street to Porterfield Square and Barter Stage II.

The Bristol Herald Courier (http://bit.ly/13pAnse ) reports that the festivities will include a Barter trivia contest, a petting zoo and free backstage tours of the main stage.

The theater was founded during the Depression by Robert Porterfield, a young actor from Southwest Virginia. When the Barter opened on June 10, 1933, the price of admission was 35 cents or the equivalent in produce.

Its alumni include Gregory Peck, Patricia Neal, Ned Beatty and Frances Fisher.
