GLADE SPRING, Va. - By Tuesday evening, the Church of New Beginnings in Glade Spring had become somewhat of a dwelling place for a community whose day was turned upside down after four people were killed and one injured in a tragic shooting.
Jeff Wallace is the pastor there. "God promised that He would send a comforter to comfort us. He will be with us through these times," said Wallace.
He says just this past Sunday, Kevin Dale Palmer, the man police say was the shooter, attended worship at the church.
Wallace says Monday afternoon, just hours before the shooting, he had lunch with Palmer. "We sat and had lunch again. Most of the time he talked about wanting to get his family back together; how much he loved his family and just wanted to get together. Between lunch time and [Tuesday] morning I'm not sure what happened," Wallace said.
While Pastor Wallace spent the evening comforting the Glade Spring community, just four miles down the road on the campus of Emory & Henry College, students, faculty and staff remembered Nancy Griffin, who had retired from the college as an administrative assistant.
They also said prayers of healing for her husband and retired professor Terry Griffin, who was in the hospital recovering as of Tuesday evening. "It's a very sad time," said Dirk Moore, director of public relations at Emory & Henry College.
Dirk Moore tells News 5 he's known Nancy Griffin for 21 years. "She became a very good friend of mine. She was a wonderful person who really helped me to feel welcome here," Moore said.
Virginia High School has planned another vigil to remember Kristin Palmer, a victim who taught at the school for over twenty years, for 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
