A man and his former girlfriend have been arrested on child sex crimes following an investigation which began after a concerned citizen came to a school resource officer about a Facebook message on a cellphone which had very explicit messages regarding a 10-year-old girl, according to Smyth County Sheriff Chip Shuler.
A search warrant was obtained for the account of suspect 41-year-old Richard Cruey, from Marion, Va. The search revealed very explicit conversations between Cruey and 38-year-old Cindy Thompson, also from Marion.
The conversations involved planned sexual acts to be committed on the 10-year-old girl. Additional information led to the recovery of more phones that contained explicit photos of the girl.
Richard Lee Cruey was charged with one count of use of communications systems to facilitate certain offenses involving children, and one count of conspiracy to commit forcible sodomy.
Laura Cindy Thompson was charged with one count of use of communications systems to facilitate certain offenses involving children.
Both Cruey and Thompson are being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon pending arraignment in the Smyth County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Additional charges are pending.
