SCOTT COUNTY, Va. - Two Virginia State Troopers are recovering tonight after a chase ends in a crash. It happened Tuesday afternoon in Scott County, Virginia.
We're told they are both expected to be ok after a day on the job that involved a checkpoint, a police chase and a six-vehicle crash.
You can view photos here of a few of the six damaged vehicles after a police chase came to a crashing end. It happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Route 704 and Route 903.
State police say a man made an abrupt turn at a police checkpoint. That's when troopers tried to stop the suspect and a chase ensued.
Scott County sheriff John Puckett told us about what happened. "I fell in behind the trooper that was chasing him. He came through Gate City very fast right through the town," he said. "He came out at Daniel Boone Road and was doing over 100 miles per hour."19698352
The chase ended with two troopers being injured -- Trooper Brian Hubbard and Trooper Jamie Lawson are both expected to recover.
"One of the troopers running lost control and went in the creek. It injured him and probably totaled his vehicle," he said. "A trooper sideswiped another trooper and the [he] ran into a parked vehicle on the side of the road. He was injured."
In all six vehicles were damaged; five were police vehicles.19698124
Police tell us the suspect, Jason Thomas Byrns, was taken into custody at the scene.
We talked with Commonwealth's Attorney Marcus McClung at the hospital Tuesday evening. He told us the suspect is charged with felony eluding police and attempted capital murder.
He'll be held in the Duffield Regional Jail. More charges are pending.
