WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. - A man is charged with murder after investigators say he shot and killed one of his relatives. The shooting happened early Saturday morning on Whites Mill Road in Washington County, Virginia.
Investigators are not releasing the victim's name yet, and we spoke with one of the family members who say this is a simply devastating loss.
A 911 call around 1:15 Saturday morning sent deputies with the Washington County Virginia Sheriff's Office to a home on Whites Mill Road. Behind closed doors deputies found a man dead, shot by a single bullet.
"It appears that both parties were drinking and had engaged in a physical confrontation. At some point the suspect produced a firearm and during a struggle, again based on the investigation, shot the victim," said Sheriff Fred Newman.
Deputies arrested Timothy Mitchler and charged him with Second Degree Murder. "The suspect was transported to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail without bond," added Sheriff Newman.
A devastating loss for family members because the victim is Mitchler's brother-in-law. "Now there's hurt all the way around for everybody," said David Mitchler, the suspect's father.
Mitchler adds this painful news is something he never expected to hear, "Timothy was a good kid, has a very good heart."
And the entire family is overwhelmed with grief. "Everybody is hurt, upset. It was a very very tragic thing that happened," said Mitchler.
Sheriff Newman says other people were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but no one else was hurt.
