DICKENSON COUNTY, Va. - Virginia State Police are investigating a shooting in Dickenson County, Virginia.
The sheriff's office tells us an officer shot and killed a man on Caney Ridge around midnight on Tuesday.
The call came in as a domestic assault; according to authorities, the man confronted the deputy and had a knife.
That officer is on administrative leave pending the results of that investigation.
The following information was released by the Virginia State Police:
"The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's (BCI) Wytheville Field Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened just after midnight Tuesday (April 30, 2013) in Dickenson County.
The Dickenson County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call of an assault at a residence in the 100 block of Paul Stanley Road, which is in the Caney Ridge section of Dickenson County. When the Deputy arrived and confronted the suspect involved in the reported assault, Gary Dean Carty 60, of Clintwood, pulled out a knife and charged at the deputy. The deputy subsequently fired at the suspect.
Carty was immediately flown by the Virginia State Police Med-Flight II helicopter to Bristol Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries and died later Tuesday morning.
The deputy was not injured in the attempted attack.
At the request of the sheriff's office, the state police BCI Police Shooting Investigative Team is investigating the incident. The investigation remains ongoing at this time. At the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be turned over to the Commonwealth's Attorney for final review and adjudication."
