Prosecutors pursue contempt charge against Judge Pomrenke

Pomrenke Legal Trouble

Legal problems are mounting for local Judge Kurt Pomrenke, already accused of judicial misconduct.

News 5 reported last week that Virginia's Judicial Inquiry and Review Commission is seeking to have him removed or censured.

That after the commission filed a complaint with the state Supreme Court, accusing him of tampering with witnesses during his wife's Bristol Virginia Utilities corruption trial.

His wife, Stacey Pomrenke, former CFO of BVU, was convicted and is serving a prison sentence.

Now court records reveal that federal prosecutors are also seeking contempt of court criminal charges against Judge Pomrenke.

He presides over juvenile and domestic relations court in Bristol, Washington County and Smyth County.

Those court documents show federal prosecutors claim that in trying to deflect the state inquiry about witness tampering, Judge Pomrenke submitted evidence to the state commission in violation of a federal court order.

Prosecutors say the court order in his wife's case allowed him on a restricted basis as part of her defense to view evidence. But they say he was prohibited from disclosing the information to anyone.

They say using it as part of his defense now violates the order and amounts to contempt of court.

A hearing in federal court in Abingdon is expected to be set soon.
