BLACKSBURG, Va. -

Virginia Tech President Charles Steger announced Tuesday that he will resign his position.

Steger, who has been the president of VT since 2000, sent an email to students Tuesday morning saying he would be leaving but will stay in the post until his successor is found.

Steger came under fire in 2007 when a gunman killed 32 students and then himself. Some of those wounded students and parents of those wounded or killed blamed him for not warning students early enough about a shooting that killed two students in a dorm.

That student later chained the doors to a classroom building shut and opened fire, killing 30 students.

Next month the Virginia Supreme Court will hear arguments about why Steger should face trial for his actions during the rampage.
