Virginia State Police to boost patrols this weekend
Virginia State Police will boost road patrols over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Increased patrols begin Friday and continue through Monday night. It's part of the annual Operation CARE national traffic-enforcement effort.
The additional patrols are aimed at reducing crashes, fatalities and injuries caused by speeding, impaired driving and failure to use seat belts.
Last year police cited nearly 11,600 speeders and 3,000 reckless drivers and arrested 137 impaired drivers. Eleven people died in traffic accidents in Virginia last year. Ten of them weren't wearing seat belts.
AAA Mid-Atlantic says it expects slightly more than 1 million Virginians to travel during the holiday weekend. That's down 1.6 percent from 2012.
