RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - State park attendance totaled a record 8.8 million visitors last year.
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation says the 2013 attendance was 6 percent higher than the year before, which was also a record. The department manages 36 state parks.
In terms of economic impact, the department said that too was up over the previous year. The direct and indirect economic impact last year was $206 million, a 4 percent increase.
For local economies, Virginia state parks generate more than $12 for every dollar of general fund money, according to Parks Director Joe Elton.
To be precise, total park attendance last year was 8,871,822.
