Update: Officer catches fugitive

Bristol, Va. - Update: Police say a wanted man is behind bars after a late night chase. Around 8:00 am Tuesday officers spotted 37-year-old Joseph Aaron Hamilton near Euclid Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue. Officers say when they tried to stop Hamilton, he ran, but Officer Jeanette Loudy ran after him. After a chase that only lasted a block, she was able to make an arrest.

She says, "I started yelling at him and I got down on the ground on top of him. He wasn't sure what I was going to do next. He said I was staying on his heels and I had already shot the taser at him once, he wasn't sure what I was going to do next."

We're told Hamilton from Maryland and had been wandering the country to avoid being caught on assault charges.

Virginia State Police say the search has been called off for a man, they say, ran from them during a traffic stop Monday night.

Troopers say there were officers in cars as well as two helicopters in the air around the Commonwealth Avenue extension and Wagner Road area of Bristol, Virginia. They also believed the man might have been in the Island Road area.

Virginia State Police describe the suspect as a slender white man, around six feet, two inches tall, with long, black braided hair. They say he is wearing a dark jacket and dark jeans.

Authorities tell News 5 residents of the area where they are looking should lock their doors and stay inside their homes.
