BUCHANAN COUNTY, Va. - UPDATE 9:50pm: We have more information in this afternoon's shooting in Southwest Virginia. The Buchanan County Sheriff's Department says four of their deputies were shot and that two have died. We have also learned that the suspect has now been killed. Details are still very limited at this point. We learned more information from Virginia State Police and Sheriff Ray Foster during a news conference this evening.
Here are the facts we have confirmed. Around 2:00pm, the Owner of Rogers Service Center, called about a Larceny in progress. Two Buchanan Sheriff Deputies responded to the call and were on the scene. Sheriff Foster tells News 5, the suspect opened fire, hitting both deputies and that both died from their injuries. The suspect then ran into the woods.
The shooting happened near Grundy in the Devils Branch area. A manhunt was underway and they found him near Route 620 and was shot and killed by officers around 4:00pm.
Families of the victims are being notified and no names have been released. At this time, there is no further information about the suspect.
Officers from several different Southwest Virginia departments were actively involved in the search for the suspect. Virginia State Police also assisted at the scene and have now taken over the investigation. The conditions of the other deputies are not known at this time but we do know they were shot while pursing the suspect into the woods. We do know at least one deputy was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center.
