HAWKINS COUNTY, Tenn. -

A Hawkins County couple is facing several charges in connection with the death of a child.

41-year-old Randall Lee Vaughn and 58-year-old Mary Lavonne Vaughn, of Surgoinsville, are charged with first degree murder, two counts of aggravated child neglect and aggravated child abuse.

Deputies say the charges come after they were informed on January 1, 2012 that five-year-old Alexa Linboom was taken to the Hawkins County Memorial Hospital emergency room. She was unresponsive.

Deputies say the child was airlifted to the Niswonger Children's Hospital in Johnson City, where she died two days later.

Following a two-year investigation, deputies say they determined the child died from acute fluid/water intoxication causing hyponatremic encepholopathy, or water poisoning.  Deputies say her death was ruled a homicide.

Now, her father and stepmother are in the Hawkins County Jail on $500,000 bond each. Both are scheduled to be in court February 7, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. in Rogersville.
