FALL BRANCH, Tenn -

A man faces theft charges after money goes missing from a Fall Branch church.

The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office said the church called for help after noticing a discrepancy in the accounting books.

Church leaders told SCSO deputies the money collected from offerings did not match up with the amount of money in the church's checking account.

The investigation discovered that more than $ 10,000 was taken from the church checking account between June 2013 and February 2014.

Detectives said they traced the transactions back to Dwight Mumpower, who had been serving as the church's treasurer during this period.

The SCSO said they believe Mumpower wrote himself checks from the church account and also used a debit card linked to the same account.

Deputies arrested Mumpower Friday evening and charged him with Theft over $10,000. He is currently being held a $10,000 bond.
