JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

The Tweetsie Trail welcomed its first walkers, runners and bikers Saturday.

The kick-off began with the runners at 8:30 Saturday morning, followed by the walkers at 9:00 a.m. and bikers at noon. The trek started at Lions Field in Elizabethton and finished at the Memorial Park Community Center, total that's 4.3 miles.

Cyclists went there and back, making their trip a total of 8.6. Everyone who participated said it was definitely something they'll come back and do again.

"I think one of the highlights of the event is that a fellow brought in a big train whistle that sounded just like the Tweetsie train," says Johnson City commissioner Jenny Brock.

"It was beautiful. It's a gorgeous trail. It's going to be great for the Johnson City area as well as Elizabethton. I highly recommend it," says biker Elizabeth Carmack.

Commissioner Jenny Brock tells News 5 they had about 2,700 people go through the trail Saturday.
