Police: Man hit by stray bullets from target shooting, 2 arrested

Two men were arrested Saturday evening in Washington County, Tennessee after police say a man was shot in the leg as the result of unsafe target shooting.

According to Washington County, Tennessee Sheriff Ed Graybeal, deputies responded to the 1600 block of Highway 107 about 6 p.m. Saturday. Officers found the victim had been working in a tomato field when he was hit twice in the left thigh from bullets being fired from a nearby residence.

An investigation revealed that two men had been shooting a high-powered rifle in an unsafe manner and direction. The men were shooting at a tree and admitted to shooting skeet with the rifle. The victim was not visible to the shooters, but they were determined to have been aiming recklessly into an open area which didn’t have a suitable backstop for the type of ammo used. The bullets went by a group of trees and through a cornfield before striking the man.

Lynn A. Jennings, 25, of Chucky, and 26-year-old Joseph Silvers of Limestone were each charged with one count of felony reckless endangerment and were held at the Washington County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond. They are due in Washington County General Sessions Court for arraignment at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
