A triple murder trial has been abruptly called off in Sullivan County. This came with jury selection in full swing in what was to be the first day of a two week trial.
Seth Denton said he was firing his attorneys, Douglas Payne and Louis Ricker, Monday. Payne was his court appointed attorney while Ricker was working pro bono.
Denton faces charges that he shot and killed his mother, stepfather, and grandmother. The shootings happened nearly two years ago.
Prosecutors did not file to seek the death penalty for Denton. If convicted though, Denton could face life in prison.
No details have been revealed about the reason Denton fired his attorneys.
Denton remains in jail on a $1 million bond and is due back court July 28 for a judge to appoint a new set of lawyers for him.
