Man charged in Blountville shooting

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. - The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office has now charged a man in connection with a shooting in Blountville.

Deputies said they found a man with non-life threatening injuries at a house on George Carr Road Tuesday night around 8:00 p.m.

Investigators believe Edward Mabe, 49, came to the house, started fighting with another man, pulled out a pistol, and fired a shot at the victim.

As the fight continued deputies said Mabe hit the victim in the head with the gun before taking off in a white car.

Authorities stopped Mabe on Buncombe at Feathers Chappel Roads and took him to the Sullivan County Jail on a charges of Attempt to Commit Second Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault.

A judge set bond at $25,000.

The full press release, published as released by Sullivan County Sheriff's Dept., is as follows:

"On 5/20/14 just before 8:00p.m. the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting [on George Carr Road]. Upon arrival officers found Jesse Smith suffering from apparent injuries to his head. Smith was transported by EMS to the Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment. His injuries are non-life threatening.

Detectives responded to the scene to take over the investigation. According to statements taken from witnesses, Edward Mabe came to [the home] and began arguing with Jesse Smith. The two men stepped outside the home, at which point Mabe pulled a pistol from his waist and fired a shot at Smith. The two men then began to fight resulting in Mabe striking Smith in the head with the gun.

Witnesses state Mabe then left the scene, went to his residence, then left in a white car. The vehicle was spotted traveling on Buncombe Road. Officers conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Buncombe Road and Feathers Chapel Road. K9 Dexter was deployed in the event the suspect attempted to flee on foot. Officers took Mabe into custody without incident and transported him to the SCSO for questioning.

Detectives located the pistol at Mabe's home. As a result of the victim's injuries, statements taken from witnesses and evidence located at the scene Edward Mabe was charged with Attempt to Commit Second Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault.

He is being held in the Sullivan County Correctional Facility on a $25,000 bond."
