UPDATE: Shooting suspect and her six-year-old daughter found dead in Johnson County

UPDATE: Police believe child may be with standoff suspect in Johnson County

JOHNSON COUNTY, Tenn. - The search for Johnson County woman accused of shooting a man and then shooting at sheriff's deputies Saturday night was called off Sunday morning.

The normally quiet Mc Ewen Road turned into a crime scene just after 10 p.m. Saturday night.

That's when the Johnson County Sheriff's Department received a call concerning a domestic altercation that led to a shooting.

"A female came out with a weapon and began shooting upon my officer," said Reece.

According to Sheriff Reece, Buchanan pinned down Deputy Adam Gwen, and after a short standout she fled the area.

That's when the search began.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol and authorities from Washington County, Virginia joined the search for Buchanan on the ground and from the sky.

Around 1 a.m. sheriff's deputies received a tip saying that Buchanan had her 6-year-old daughter with her.

Sunday morning around 8:30, Bill Dunn arrived at his son's home on McEwen Road and found two bodies laying on a well head near the front of the yard.

He then stopped a passerby who called 911.

"Upon the arrival of my officers, we found to females deceased and it was the female involved in the domestic shooting last night and her daughter," said Reece.

Buchanan and her daughter Lexis both sustained gunshot wounds to the head.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Department has not determined a motive for the shooting. It is believed to be a murder-suicide. 


UPDATE 7:50 p.m.: The Johnson County Sheriff's Department confirms Lexis, the girl who died in a shooting incident Saturday night/Sunday morning, was six years old, not seven years old like investigators first believed.


UPDATE 1:00 p.m.: WCYB's Jonathan Radford has been in Johnson County gathering all the facts in this case throughout the morning.

Sheriff Mike Reece confirms they recovered the body of shooting suspect Heather Buchannan.

Sheriff Reece tells us Buchannan shot Mark Johnson, whom she lived with, late Saturday night.

After a standoff with Johnson County deputies, Buchannan escaped police with her daughter Lexi Buchannan into nearby woods.

The bodies of both Heather and Lexi Buchannan were discovered Sunday around 9 a.m.

UPDATE 11:50 a.m.: Sheriff Mike Reece has confirmed to News 5 WCYB that the manhunt for a woman suspect who shot a man she lived with, and who fired shots towards a Johnson County Deputy on scene has ended.

The bodies of both the suspect's 7-year-old daughter and the suspect were found Sunday morning around 9 o'clock on McEwen Road in Johnson County.

We're told there's no word on what initiated the shooting of the male victim who lived with the suspect, or the victim's current condition.

He is currently at Johnson City Medical Center.

UPDATE 3:30 a.m.: News 5 WCYB's Lyndsey Price is still on scene in Johnson County and spoke with Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece and he says the victim and suspect did live together, we we're first told that they did not.

Sheriff Reece is also telling Lyndsey the shooting happened on McEwen Road and the victim was picked up at 1129 McEwen Road.

Officers are checking Ids of everyone that is coming in and out of the road.

The search for the suspect at this hour continues.

Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece tells us police are on the scene of a standoff on Forge Road. We're told police are searching for a woman accused of shooting a man Saturday night.

Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene around 10 p.m. Saturday.

According to Sheriff Reece an ambulance and a sheriff's deputy responded to the call about a male victim with gunshot wounds. Sheriff Reece says while the deputy was walking toward the suspect's house, she fired between four and six rounds at the deputy.

We're told the deputy was pinned next to his car. He was not injured and was safely rescued by sheriff's deputies.

Sheriff Reece tells us night vision gear was used to watch the suspect go in and out of her house. Deputies used a PA system to try to talk the suspect out of the house.

Police tell us they threw a smoke bomb into the house and discovered the suspect was not inside. That's when a search began in the wooded area behind the home.

During the investigation police got a tip the suspect may have a child with her. We're told law enforcement is now using all sources including infrared technology and K-9 units from the Washington County, Virginia Sheriff's Office

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Damascus Police Department are working the scene.

We're told the male gunshot victim was taken to the Johnson City Medical Center and required surgery.

Police are still investigating the shooting. They do know the suspect and the victim did not live in the same home.
