A Mountain City policeman was indicted Thursday on drug charges, marking the second time a ranking department member has been jailed this week.
Sgt. Elmer Kenneth Lane, 61, is charged with with one count of Conspiracy to Possess Schedule II Drugs with Intent to Deliver in a School Zone, one count of Solicitation to Commit Delivery of Schedule II Drugs, and Simple Possession of Schedule II Drugs, according to information released by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Lt. Ronald Shupe, 44, is facing 12 state charges that will be added to the existing federal drug charges brought against him earlier this week. The new charges include three counts of official misconduct, possession of schedule II drugs with intent to deliver in a school zone and solicitation to commit assault, the report said.
TBI agents reported that Lane and Shupe were obtaining, distributing and using illegal drugs while on and off duty and some of the drug deals conducted by the officers were done near schools.
An informant told federal investigators that she regularly received drugs from Shupe and injected him with drugs while inside his police cruiser, according to court documents obtained by News 5.
Shupe was served with the state charges while being held in the Washington County, TN Detention Center while Lane was arrested and charged Thursday. He is being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
