Storm clean-up continues in Johnson City

Region cleans up after storms

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - People in Johnson City are continuing clean-up after strong storms swept through our area Thursday afternoon. There are trees down in yards and even on homes in Johnson City leaving some people just trying to figure out what they will do next.

"It was sort of unbelievable, but you know it's just one of those things that happen and you just have to go with it," says Bill McGillen.

A large oak tree covers the outside of McGillen's home, making it hard to see anything beyond the limbs. "Part of the oak tree was in the front was in our living room. It broke out the windows and it's about halfway through our living room," adds McGillen.

The front porch of his home is now behind all of the branches. McGillen tells News 5 he's thankful he and his wife moved to the interior of their home. "Fortunately it missed both of us and we were not injured in anyway," says McGillen.

A few miles away, Michael Cairnes and his family were lucky as well. His home was spared from a fallen tree, but is still having to deal with the cost of removing it. "We don't know what we're going to do with it," adds Cairnes

Cairnes tells News 5 he and his wife aren't sure how they are going to get rid of the tree. "We don't have the money to have it cut up and taken off. We're hoping somebody might get it for the wood," says Cairnes.

One thing everyone is thankful for is the support of their neighbors. McGillen says, "In times of need they come to the rescue."

We  learned some tree removal services were out working Thursday night until 11 and were back Friday morning at 7 a.m. to help people get rid of the trees on their homes and in their yards.
