JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - It's Mark Rieland's job to find new employees for his Wisconsin-based company. He wants to know all he can about those he's considering adding to the payroll.
He's interested in their lives beyond their resume and one of the best tools for getting information is social media. "People should be concerned what they put online," says Rieland, "it's amazing what some people make accessible, especially on Facebook."
Maci Sonneberger graduates in May with her marketing degree, and so far she's still on the hunt for a place to work.
She knows her future boss could be looking online and says she is very careful about what she posts. "I think it's a good way to network and expand the job market and employers can see what's posted," says Sonneberger.
Recent numbers reports show the job market is getting better. Recruiters say they have openings and they are ready to hire. "We are willing to hire," says Rieland. "We actually have several positions open."
Employers say they are going beyond career fairs. Rieland says they've found many of their recent new employees through social media. "LinkedIn is probably one of our best recruiting tools actually," says Rieland.
With graduation quickly approaching, Maci Sonneberger says she's optimistic she will find a job. "It can be intimidating at first, but you just have to realize they are people too and you have to look for the right fit for you," says Sonneberger.
