Johnson City holds job fair just for veterans

Veterans job fair

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - They have served our country and now the community is looking to give back to them. The Northeast Career Center in Johnson City brought in more than a dozen businesses to help veterans and their families find jobs in a difficult market.

Paychecks for Patriots allowed for the veterans to see openings that are available all around the Tri-Cities and in some cases, gave them the chance to apply on the spot.

"The job market is really tough right now and there is so much going on with layoffs," said Mark Toronjo.

And Toronjo says he knows from experience. "I just got laid off from my other job so I'm looking for something," said Toronjo.

Hundreds of veterans and their family members lined up Thursday outside of the Northeast Career Center in Johnson City in hopes of leaving with a job. "It's basically a hiring blitz for veterans and their families," said Ann Chapman, the Employer Services Specialist.

Over 13 businesses showed up with job openings available for those attending to apply for. "They're giving applications out, directing them online, letting them know how to apply and get those jobs they have available," said Chapman.

Cathey McClelland from Aid and Assist at Home told me they were looking for new hires. "We are in need of caregivers, kind loving people," said McClelland.

In addition, McClelland tells us she would be happy to have veterans and their families working with them because of their service to our country. "I think it displays a characteristic of devotion, reliability and dependability," said McClelland.

Chapman said they would be holding these same events all across the state, in hopes to help local veterans.

If you missed this opportunity, the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce will be holding a job fair next Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Marriott Meadowview.

Interested employers and job seekers register for free at Walk-in job seekers are allowed. Veterans must provide military ID.
