ETSU assistant football coach jailed for assault, public intoxication

An assistant football coach at East Tennessee State University was arrested over the weekend in Chattanooga after being accused of threatening to kill a hotel clerk during an argument over a room card key.

Court documents obtained by News 5 show Jeffrey Scott Brumett, 35, was booked into jail just after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday and is charged with one count of assault, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

Witnesses reported hearing Brumett yell profanities and threaten to kill staff if his card did not work, according to an affidavit.

University spokesperson Joe Smith said Brumett has been suspended from the program with pay pending an investigation.

Brumett is listed as Defensive Line coach for the Buccaneers. An ETSU alum, Brumett joined the program in February 2015 after being defensive coordinator at Maryville College and at UT Chattanooga, according to biographical information listed on the ETSU website.

Hamilton County, TN Sessions Court records show Brumett's arraignment date is scheduled for July 13.
