CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. - Two Roan Mountain men sit in the Carter County Jail for the alleged murder of 56-year-old Danny Vance.
Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes held a news conference Sunday detailing the events that led up to and followed the alleged murder.
"Desperate people do desperate things," says Sheriff Mathes.
That's the way Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes describes the motives behind 19-year-old Demetrice Cordell and 18-year-old Anthony Lacy.
Mathes says the two men went on a crime spree conducting numerous thefts throughout Roan Mountain. They stole a truck, 2 four-wheelers and broke into multiple cars.
Mathes tells News 5 between between 11:30 P.M. on July 3rd and 1:30 A.M. on July 4th the men went to Vance's home planning to rob him.
Cordell and Lacy lured Vance out of his home, then beat him.
"We know that Mr. Vance was struck multiple times with a rock, primarily and specifically in the back of the head," adds Mathes.
Mathes says after the men allegedly murdered Vance they fled the scene on four-wheelers a manhunt followed and led officers to a home nearby.
Mathes said a pistol believed to be that of Danny Vance's was found at the home.
Cordell and Lacy now face multiple charges.
"Theft of property over $500 dollars. Theft of property over a $1,000. Evading arrest, aggravated robbery and first degree murder," says Captain Jeff Markland with the Carter County Sheriff's Office.
Vance's family found his body on his porch shortly after 10:00 A.M. on July 4th.
"The Vance family is obviously very devastated and they've got a lot of hard days ahead of them having to deal with this. Hurt, anger, just a senseless, senseless murder," says Mathes.
Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes says he appreciates the people of Roan Mountain for their tips and their trust in the Carter County Sheriff's Office during the manhunt and investigation.
Both men are being held in the Carter County Jail on a $210,000 bond.
Mathes tells News 5 the Carter County's Sheriff's Office is still waiting on autopsy results at this time.
