A former Bristol Tennessee attorney charged with stealing money from the estates of clients pleaded guilty Monday in Sullivan County Criminal Court.
Don Cooper, 71, received a 15-year sentence in the proceedings with no probation ordered, according to court information obtained by News 5.
The lawyer was first arrested in September 2016 after investigators said he took $250,000 from one estate between May 2012 and November 2013. He was back in court just two months ago after being charged with six more counts of theft over $10,000 and one count of theft over $60,000 following his indictment by a Sullivan County grand jury.
Prosecutors said some of the funds taken by Cooper were earmarked for contributions to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital in Memphis.
