CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Students at Apison Elementary School in Hamilton County will soon be gardening.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports the students recently broke ground on the 4,000-square-foot space between the wings of the school.

Part outdoor classroom, part sustainable garden, Principal Ron Hughes says the development will give students a hands-on approach to their learning.

School officials say the garden also will demonstrate the importance of environmental sustainability, a problem they say future generations will continue to face.
