Snow expectations and preparations

Local road crews spent Wednesday getting ready for this latest round of winter weather. News Five Wcyb's Preston Ayres talked with the Tennessee Department of Transportation to find out what they are expecting.

These snow plows are ready for a fight. With more accumulating snow in the forecast the Tennessee Department of Transportation plans to strike quickly.

But Thursday's 30 degree temperatures are changing the game plan. The road surface temperature is already at or below the freezing point, making it too cold to pre-treat with chemicals

David Lewis, TDOT supervisor said, "We still have a lot of residue on the road from where we salted before we will probably just go into salt mode."

David Lewis told us they've already had to clear one round of snow when 2 inches fell on i-26 in Sams Gap early Thursday morning.

The men and women of this TDOT office are responsible for clearing nearly 2-thousand miles of the roads we drive. They've logged a lot of miles in their fleet of 50 snow plows over the past few weeks.

We checked with  county highway departments across east Tennessee, and all say they are well stocked.  Unicoi and Washington County both told us they re-stocked their salt bins this week.

They are also seeing potholes pop up on the interstate.

Davis Lewis said, "We are just trying right now to get all the pot holes fixed on the interstate."

Transporation officials say they are ready. Now it's just a wait and see to find out when they need to hit the road.
