SMYTH COUNTY, Va. -

Some local schools went on a modified lockdown Tuesday after authorities say a suspicious man was spotted nearby.

Smyth County Schools Superintendent Mike Robinson says a man pulled up to Atkins Elementary with out-of-state tags, but when the principal approached him he left.

Robinson says the vehicle was found later near Oak Point Elementary with no one inside, and a person was seen walking toward the woods near the school.

Robinson tells us the students were safe and the lockdown of Oak Point and the Smyth Career & Technology Center was only a precaution.
