UPDATE 10:40 a.m.: We've just learned the driver of the bus involved in the accident this morning has been charged with reckless driving, although speed was not a factor in the crash. Click here to view photos from the scene.
Eleven students were on the bus at the time of the accident. Three students were injured -- a 15-year-old female, a 14-year-old make and a 17-year old male. They were taken to the Russell County Medical Center.
The driver, 63-year-old Robert R. Trent, Jr., was also injured and taken for treatment.
A representative of VSP supplied us with the following information:
"At 7:38 a.m. Monday (Sept. 30), Virginia State Police Trooper S.A. Sutherland responded to the scene of a school bus crash in Russell County. The crash occurred on Route 671 about a half mile from Route 58.
A Russell County school bus was traveling north on Route 671 when it ran off the left side of the gravel road. The bus went down a slight embankment and overturned onto its side.
There were a total of 11 elementary, middle and high school students on the bus at the time. Three students and the driver were all transported to Russell County Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. The injured students include a 15-year-old female, a 14-year-old male and a 17-year-old male.
The driver, Robert R. Trent Jr., 63, of St. Paul, Va., was wearing a seat belt. Trent has been charged with reckless driving. Speed was not a factor in the crash.
The incident remains under investigation."
UPDATE 9:13: Authorities in Russell County, Virginia are on the scene of a school bus crash.
According to a sheriff's department spokesman, a bus apparently went over a hill on Honaker Chapel Road, which is just off of Route 58.
It happened just before 7:40 a.m. Monday morning near Honaker Chapel Church.
According to Virginia State Police there were 10 students on board the bus at the time.
Three students and the driver suffered minor injuries according to a state police press release.
We are working to learn more about the bus and where it was headed.
We have crew headed to Russell County and will have more information as it becomes available.
