VIRGINA BEACH, Va. -

Grand juries in Virginia Beach and Suffolk have indicted a retired firefighter on more than 50 sexual assault charges.

Sixty-year-old Robert Vance Gallup is accused of assaults that occurred between 1976 and 1986.

The charges include forcible sodomy, aggravated sexual battery of a child age 13 to 15, and indecent liberties with a child.

Virginia Beach police tell The Virginian-Pilot that officers were contacted more than a year ago by the victim, who said he'd been sexually abused during the mid-1970s and mid-1980s. Police in Virginia Beach and Suffolk conducted a joint investigation.

Gallup is being held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
