County commissioners put the brakes on a proposed increase to Greene County's wheel tax.
A resolution proposed a $10 increase to the current $20 motor vehicle tax to generate revenue for the county's general fund.
With virtually no discussion at the Greene County commission meeting Monday morning, the proposal failed by a vote of 15 to six.
Commissioner M.C. Rollins, Jr. told News 5 he voted for the tax increase because Greene County has a $1 million deficit that still needs to be solved. "If we can't come to an agreement on this budget, I mean the state could come in and they can set a budget for us," Rollins said.
Rollins told us at this time, he's not sure how the county will balance the budget.
The new fiscal year begins July 1.
