ABINGDON, Va. -

Power has been restored to more than 3,000 households left without power Thursday afternoon.

AEP's Tony Miller confirmed to News 5 around 2:30 Friday morning, power had been restored.

Those outages started around 2:30 Thursday afternoon, with a transformer issue at a substation. AEP officials say a mobile transformer was sent from Roanoke, and crews worked all night to get that in place and get all customers back on-line.

AEP says part of the blame for the outages is the cold weather the region has experienced.

A shelter was opened at Pleasant View United Methodist to keep people out of the cold.

Washington County Emergency Management officials tell News 5 it will remain open until 8 a.m. to allow people to sleep.
