Freewill Baptist Church members braved the cold water at South Holston Lake in Bristol on Saturday morning for a worthy cause.
The church's ‘Water'n Hole Polar Plunge for Christ’ event helps raise money for their youth ministry, and this year the freezing cold swim is also raising money to prevent teen suicide.
The issue hits close to home for some of the younger church members who attend Sullivan East High School. In September this year one of their fellow students, Thomas Trent, tragically took his own life.
That's why some of the money raised is going to the Johnson City Medical Center's teen suicide prevention programs.
"It's very important that we show initiative amongst our youth to protect ourselves, and make it aware that is it an issue,” said Ted White, Freewill Baptist Church’s Ministry Director. “It's an illness that can be prevented if people are just open to talk about it."
Last year the church's polar plunge raised $3,000, this year they are hoping to double that number.
